German Wrecks Seen by the 752nd

Tank Commander Ray Holt and Assistant Driver Ralph Merck of B Company pose beside a late model StuG III Ausf G, destroyed at Hill 966 (also known as The Rock).

- Researched and Written by Robert Holt -

According to the claims in the official records, the 752nd Tank Battalion destroyed 2,375 German vehicles, excluding an unknown quantity that may have been destroyed during static indirect firing missions between January and March 1945. The vast majority of the claimed kills were wheeled vehicles, with an astounding 2,289 destroyed in the violent Po Valley shoot 'em up that took place during the final 3 weeks of the war.

Despite the high number of wheeled vehicles that comprise the total kill, the 752nd still can add a respectable number of armored vehicles to its credit. Specifically, the 752nd destroyed 45 armored vehicles, which translates to nearly a battalion of enemy strength. In addition, the ratio of enemy armor destroyed to 752nd armored lost is .87 to 1.00. While the 752nd lost more armor than it destroyed, the loss ratio is quite respectable for an armored battalion that was largely outclassed by its enemy.

In addition to the German armor it destroyed, the 752nd Tank Battalion also claims 118 machine gun nests, 27 artillery pieces, 21 pillboxes, 4 mortars, and 2 anti-aircraft guns to its credit. Again, these counts exclude an unknown quantity of enemy weapons that were probably destroyed during the static indirect firing missions between January and March 1945.

What follows are some random photos of several wrecks seen by the men of the 752nd Tank battalion. Some of these wrecks have been fully identified from prior research. However, some of the more recently acquired photos are either unifdentified, or perhaps misidentified. In the interest of accuracy, I would greatly appreciate any corrections that can be offered.
